More about Save the Date Cards

A save the date card is the first formal announcement of your wedding. It is sent well in advance of the invitation to let guests know the date so they can keep it free, arrange travel, and make accommodation plans if needed.

printready.live produces save the date cards in full colour on 350gsm premium digital cardstock, available in a range of flat and folded formats, supplied with envelopes.

When to Send Save the Dates

  • 6–9 months in advance for local weddings in Ireland
  • 12–18 months in advance for destination weddings or guests travelling internationally

Sending early is especially important for peak dates, bank holidays, and summer weekends when availability and travel costs can be a factor.

What to Include

Save the date cards are intentionally simple and typically include:

  • Couple’s names
  • Wedding date
  • General location (city or county)
  • Optional: venue name
  • Optional: wedding website URL
  • Note that a formal invitation will follow

Some couples also include an engagement photo or brief personal message.

Flat vs Folded Formats

Flat Save the Dates

Printed on both sides. Ideal for clean, minimal designs or layouts featuring a photo on one side and details on the other.

Folded Save the Dates

Provide additional space across four panels. Suitable for including extra details, notes, or a more personalised presentation.

Flat formats are most commonly used due to the simple nature of save the date content.

Premium 350gsm Card Stock

All save the date cards are printed on 350gsm premium digital cardstock, offering:

  • A strong, high-quality feel
  • Excellent full colour reproduction
  • A card that stands upright for display
  • Consistency with the full wedding stationery suite

  • A6 (105 x 148mm) - compact postcard style
  • DL (99 x 210mm) - tall, modern format

An effective way to give guests early notice and ensure your wedding date is kept free.

Six to nine months before the wedding is standard for a typical Irish wedding. For destination weddings, bank holiday weekends, peak summer dates, or weddings with many guests travelling from abroad, twelve to eighteen months in advance gives guests the lead time they need for flights and accommodation.
Flat cards are printed on both sides, giving two printable surfaces. Folded cards give four printable surfaces. For save the dates, flat formats are most common as the content is typically brief. Folded formats suit couples who want to include more detail or establish the full stationery aesthetic from the first mailing.
Include the couple's names, the wedding date, and the general location or venue name. A note that the formal invitation will follow is standard. A wedding website URL is a useful addition if one has been set up, giving guests access to accommodation and travel information early.
Printed stationery cannot be corrected after production. Check the date, names, location, and website address carefully before submitting artwork. A save the date with an incorrect date requires reprinting and resending to the full guest list, which is both costly and creates confusion. Have someone else proofread the final artwork before it goes to print.
Seven formats are available: A6 flat, DL flat, A5 flat, 150mm square flat, small folded (A5 to A6), large folded (A4 to A5), and square folded (150mm). All are printed full colour on 350gsm premium digital cardstock and supplied with envelopes.
Supply a print-ready PDF in CMYK colour mode with 3mm bleed on all sides at the correct finished size. For folded formats, supply a flat sheet showing all four panels. Confirm the layout and fold direction with printready.live before finalising. Keep all text at least 4mm inside the trim line.
Not necessarily. Some couples use the save the date as a preview of the full stationery aesthetic, while others keep it simpler. If ordering a coordinated stationery suite, using consistent design elements across all pieces from save the date to table stationery gives the most cohesive result.
This depends on whether you are sending one per household or one per individual guest. A guest list of 120 people across 80 households requires 80 save the dates if sending per address. Add a small buffer of five to ten for keepsakes and late additions.
The card itself is priced the same as other formats. An Post applies a surcharge to square envelopes as they require manual sorting. Factor this into your postage budget if choosing the square format.
Yes. Full colour printing reproduces photographs accurately on 350gsm cardstock. Supply the highest resolution image available at a minimum of 300dpi at the finished print size. Images from social media or phone screenshots at low resolution will not reproduce well in print.
Yes. Envelopes matched to the card format are included as standard with all orders.
